Meeting Pizza on Dubuque
I. the Bottle Bill: Black Hawk County and other Green chapters are taking up this issue: Fareway and some other grocery chains have tried to refuse accepting cans and bottles. The Iowa Attorney General has notified Fareway stores in some cities that they must continue to accept them. A member will get a list of grocery stores in this area, members will divide up the list and make calls to find out what local stores are planing to do. II. Issues of concern: A former school board member has
alerted us about a III. Citizens for Public Power is starting a new phase of their campaign to pass a referendum for Iowa City to do a feasibility study on adopting a municipal utility. Members unanimously approved the Johnson County Green Party's endorsement of this project.
IV. Libertarians/joint meeting: Thom Hartmann (progressive writer and radio show host) will be in Cedar Rapids on April 2. The Libertarians would like the Iowa Green Party to help out with publicity and logistics, mostly in Cedar Rapids and Iowa City. The event would include join a strategy/planning session to discuss policy areas Greens and Libertarians might effectively lobby on together (ballot status/ partisan registration/electoral reform; Patriot Act; corporate charters). V. Materials/upcoming event: FAIR! is holding an event at The Mill where we can have some of our literature available. We need to update our local brochure; we have several other brochures and flyers that will work, if we can't get that done by Sunday. VI. We decided to hold Johnson County Green Party meetings on the first Tuesday of the month. The next meeting will be February 1st at 7 p.m, at Pizza on Dubuque. We will send out more advance notice and call on new members and Campus Greens. We will have on hand a list of county and city elected offices, boards and commissions, and will discuss where there are vacancies and upcoming races members may wish to apply or run for.
